Facebook Marketing Can Be Really Confusing…Here Are Some Basics…

The Short Version:

Facebook is more Big Brother than even the all-mighty GOOGLE…learn how to leverage that for your benefit when it comes to Facebook marketing and “boosts”.

In this day and age, it is critical that a business “exists” where its audience is. A web site is about as basic and necessary as your business license; SEO is the next step from there; leveraging social media is, like, Step 2.a. for existing.

With almost 2 billion users, The Facebook is kinda a big deal. Insta (owned by Facebook, by the way) sits somewhere around a respectable 800 million users. Twitter is like the red-headed step child with around 300 million. Point being, if you are not on social media, and especially Facebook, you don’t exist.

How to Social Media

To be clear, you don’t need a social media account across every single platform. Will it hurt you if you do? Only if you don’t maintain them properly. More importantly, you need to pick the platform that best suits your business and your audience.

For most, Facebook is it. If your work is highly visual (food industry, art industry, tattoos, barbers, etc…) then incorporating Instagram (IG) would be beneficial. Twitter is best suited for businesses that share a lot of information and updates…like news outlets. The nice thing about IG being owned by Facebook is that they make it easy to manage them together.

So What Should I Post??

So, let’s say you have your business Facebook page. Now, you don’t know what to post or how often. Fair enough. Let’s keep it easy: share information about your business, and your company. Don’t make every post a sales pitch. Do make posts that are personal and real.

People will “follow” your page because:

a) it gives them information that is helpful

b) it entertains them

How Should I use Facebook Ads?

The amount of specificity Facebook offers in building a target audience gives small and large businesses, hands down, the most targeted audience ever in the history of advertising, for an insanely reasonable price.

Use Facebook Ads to get your business in front of your audience.

One of the scariest powers that Facebook has is that it knows EVERYTHING about EVERYONE. It tracks which pages you follow, which pages you look at, how long you look, what your interests are, what they aren’t, and a whole bevy of other personal information that they aggregate every time you are signed in.

Invasion of privacy? Maybe. But, the thing about Facebook is, they give that power to you when you decide to “boost” a post/create a Facebook ad. How? Well, let’s say you create a post that talks about a special offer you are running…when you go to create the ad for it, you will have the option to “create an audience”. This is where the magic happens, but unfortunately a lot of people skip this important step.

Creating an Audience

If you skip this section, Facebook will place your ad in front of as many people as possible. You can define this by geography and/or age on a very basic level. Getting your post in front of millions of people might sound great at first, however, if you really want to maximize your return, you need to take advantage of Facebook and tailor your audience very specifically to the people most likely to use your business. Facebook calls this using a “filter”.

When you start filtering your audience, you will see that you have the ability to reach people with the right interests, backgrounds, and incomes that are best suited to match the type of people that would use your service or product. The amount of specificity Facebook offers in building an target audience gives small and large businesses, hands down, the most targeted audience ever in the history of advertising, for an insanely reasonable price.
