The Short Version:

  • Be prepared to create change
  • Control the little things
  • Create customer loyalty and discover new revenue streams

COVID-19 has put many businesses at the mercy of local government, which is obviously a disaster. Counties have to walk the fine line of safety, personal freedom/rights, and economic growth. Unfortunately that “line” feels like it wouldn’t pass a sobriety test over these last few trying months. This has left many businesses in a terrible position.

For many businesses, this sadly meant having to close up permanently, unable to ride out the COVID storm. For others, it has been a frustrating back and forth of “do this, don’t do that, never mind you’re closed again”.

However, at the end of the day business growth can still happen during COVID-19. Your business needs to be doing certain things during COVID-19 closures to ensure strong business growth when/if you are able to open.

Creating Change Helps Business Growth

Organizational leaders and business owners have to recognize that in today’s environment, they have to be ready to CREATE change…not just wait for it to happen. Change is dynamic and always there in successful organizations. Change is not something that “happens to us”. If you wait for change to “happen”, then you are already behind the curve. You are reacting. Not anticipating.

Even the best organizations, with the best processes and systems in place are constantly evaluating, fine tuning, and adjusting those processes and systems. This allows them to recognize bottlenecks and inefficiencies early, and make small, necessary changes to correct them.

Nobody could have anticipated the impact COVID-19 would have on the economy. Fair enough. However, I am certain that during business closure many inefficiencies in your business have come to light, revealed in ways like “if only we did this” or “if only we had that in place”, we could still be open. Hindsight is 20/20, and a victim mentality will get you nowhere, so what can you do about it now? FOCUS ON CONTROLLING THE LITTLE THINGS. The biggest little thing you can control? Your customer relationships.

Customers Are Your Life Blood

When business is good, or at the very least, open, then most businesses should be putting a focus on developing customer relationships. Customer retention is what separates ok businesses from thriving businesses. By some metrics, it is 7 times more expensive to acquire a new customer than it is to sell to an existing one.

Great ways to develop customer relationships include:

  • email lists and newsletters
  • loyalty programs
  • referral programs
  • active and engaging social media pages
  • personalized service
  • reminder programs

If you didn’t have these things going into COVID-19 shut downs, then this is one change you need to create right now. It is never too late to start developing customer relationships. Every sale is an opportunity to capture some basic info. Start with an email address, or even a cell number. There are great, affordable, and simple programs for creating and sending customer emails and texts. Which leads us to the next item…

Communicate and Engage with Your Customers

Once you have a way to access your customers outside of your business, your priority should be to find ways to engage them. People want to feel connected to the brand behind the business. So, let them know what your business is all about. The people behind the brand, not just the brand itself.

This does not mean to inundate them with email blasts. Please just stop with that. What it does mean is sharing relevant and important information. This can be informative, about certain products or services you have. Or it can be purposeful, to generate quick sales or leads. It can also just be fun. Engage with your customers by giving them content that they want, that matters to them, and that helps them in some way.

Keep in contact with frequent updates. At the very least, you should be making sure that your customers aren’t forgetting about you. This is especially critical when business does reopen.

Engage with your customers by giving them content that they want, that matters to them, and that helps them in some way.
